If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can now use your HSA or FSA card to pay for eligible items on Amazon. This lets you put your balance towards dozens of health and hygiene items, including eye drops, vitamins, lip balm, first aid kits, certain contraceptives and more.

Not only does this allow you to pay for medical supplies with pre-tax dollars, but it also eliminates the hassle of having to go to the store to pick up essentials. Another pro: it makes it easier to spend your remaining FSA funds when the deadline to use them is quickly approaching (HSA funds, on the other hand, roll over to the following year).

How do I purchase items online?

Search for products using the button above or right hereWhen you are ready to purchase, you will be guided to Amazon to procure the product. The experience will look similar to any other purchase you make on Amazon. You don’t want to just go to Amazon. Why? Because this link will show only HSA/FSA eligible products which makes the process to search and purchase much easier.

What can I Purchase on Amazon with my FSA or HSA card?

Eligible products range from canes and gauze to pregnancy tests and syringes. As always, make sure to keep all detailed receipts as they will most likely be requested. Over the counter medicine cannot be purchased because they require a prescription to be FSA or HSA eligible. This feature is not supported by Amazon. If you have a prescription for an OTC medicine and decide to purchase it on Amazon using other payment methods, then you may be able to request reimbursement from your plan administrator.

What is an FSA?

An FSA is an employer-sponsored savings account for health care expenses. You are not taxed on the money put into the FSA and you can then use the account to pay for qualified out-of-pocket health care costs, such as your deductible and copays, but not your premium. FSAs were created in the 1970’s to enable employees to use pre-tax dollars for health care expenses that were not otherwise covered by employer-sponsored health coverage. These accounts gained more popularity in the 2000’s, and they underwent a few changes with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), including the addition of an annual contribution limit. Health FSAs can save you money on taxes while helping you regularly put aside money for health care expenses. If carefully planned, using an FSA for health care costs can be an asset to your family’s budget.

What is an HSA?

An HSA is a tax-advantaged savings account that can be used for your health care expenses. Money comes out of each paycheck and is deposited into the account for future use. If you have a high deductible health insurance plan, an HSA can help provide some security for your health care costs and limit out-of-pocket expenses. Since the deposits are coming straight out of each paycheck, the money you contribute to an HSA is pre-tax and the interest that accumulates in the account is tax-free. An HSA is a good option for someone who is young and generally health. If you have a high deductible health insurance plan and are able to come up with an reasonable estimate of your health care expenses each year, you could potentially save a great deal of money with an HSA.
